100% Laser Assembly if Jewelry
The Cycles Pendant, David Alvarado of Irthly Designs, Los Angeles, CA
The Cycles Pendant was created by David Alvarado of Irthly Designs in Los Angeles, CA and was the Second Prize winning piece in the 2013 MJSA Vision Awards Competition – Laser Distinction category sponsored by LaserStar Technologies.
“Aside from the launch of my collection, I own a small laser welding and laser engraving shop called NODAV Jewelry Laserworks located in downtown Los Angeles, CA,” says David. “I can attest to the importance of great laser welding machines. I have an old LaserStar laser welder that has worked beyond its years! I have been very happy with it!”
“In my new line, laser technology is indispensable. I integrate delicate organic material with gold by the use of laser welders. Without laser technology, my line would not be possible.”
The Cycles Pendant is made of 18k rose gold and diamonds inlayed in vegetable ivory on a 16 inch 18k rose gold chain. Vegetable Ivory is a seed of a palm tree from the tropical rainforest of Equador.
VTS and Laser: The challenge that requires technical solutions comes in the integration of the organic material with the necessary fastening of the metals. Since not one item is glued and all metals are securely fastened into the vegetable ivory, a combination of CNC machining, laser welding and laser engraving was achieved. CNC machining shapes the inlay, laser welding welds the metal parts together, and the laser engraving is used to place serial numbers and logos in the back of each item for patent protection.
Since the vegetable ivory is fully organic, there is absolutely no room for error or the piece will be compromised. If the CNC is not accurately aligned, the seed will shatter. If the laser spot welding is off, the vegetable ivory would burn. Without these technical machines and techniques, these pieces would not endure.
